7 Fun Family Hobby Ideas for Busy Mommas on a Budget

Finding fun ideas for your family and sticking to a budget is a struggle. All the fun things a family can do require money, and when money is in short supply, it is hard to figure out what you can do as a family. As my husband and I work during the week, running household duties and keeping up with a toddler, little brain power is left over for hobbies and fun things once the weekend arrives.

Also, if you’re a busy momma on a budget, finding fun family hobbies that won’t break the bank can be challenging. So, I have compiled a brief list of 7 fun ideas to get your creative juices flowing! Busy mommas and busy families need to take a break, relax, and unwind but also not break the bank!

Here are seven hobby ideas that are affordable and fun for the whole family:

  1. Cooking or baking: Cooking or baking together as a family is a terrific way to bond and have fun. You can make meals or desserts using ingredients you already have at home. My husband loves cooking, and my daughter has been excited about cooking shows. She loves it. When we are all in the kitchen, she will also come and try to “help” out. Since this is something that all families can do, it is the easiest way to connect and stick to your budget.
  2. Movie nights at home: Instead of going to the movie theater, have a movie night. You can rent a movie or watch one of the many free online options. Though my daughter is still a bit young for a movie night at home, my husband and I love a good movie night once she is off to bed, and it’s a great way to unwind.
  3. Join a gym or make your own at home: We have a home gym, which also helps keep the cost low and keep us all healthy and motivated to work out, or you can also join a local gym (find one within your budget).
  4. Nature walks: Take a walk in nature and explore your local parks or trails. It is a great way to exercise and enjoy the outdoors without spending money.
  5. Game nights: Board games and card games are an excellent way to have fun as a family without spending much money. You can even make your games using materials you already have at home.
  6. Arts and Crafts/ Tackle a Home DIY Project: Get creative and make some art or crafts together as a family or address some DIY projects around the house. You can use materials at home or find affordable options at your local craft store or hardware store. Though we are not super crafty as a family, something always needs to be patched up or repaired around the house. Getting these trivial things done as a family can be rewarding and encourage teamwork. Check out the following article for an example of one of these projects.
  7. Reading: Reading together as a family is a terrific way to bond and encourage literacy. You can borrow books from the library or find free e-books online. Our daughter loves to grab her readers and bring them to my husband or me to read. It encourages her to learn and brings a connection to the family.

  3. The Game of Life Junior – This version of the classic game is designed for younger children and features more straightforward concepts, such as earning money and making choices.
  4. Sequence for Kids – This game is an excellent introduction to strategy games and helps children develop critical thinking skills.
